Weak signal and offline
What Konkat can and cannot do without signal: last-loaded screens, saved photos, the No signal bar, and how to save once you are back online.
On this page
Basements, lift wells and new sites often have poor signal. Konkat keeps a copy of the screens you have opened so you can still read them, and tells you clearly when something could not be saved. This article explains exactly what works without signal.
The short version#
| Without signal you can… | Without signal you cannot… |
|---|---|
| Open the installed app | Save anything — progress, logs, QC, stock, photos |
| Read screens you opened before (as they were last loaded) | Open screens you have never opened on this phone |
| See photos you have already viewed | Open PDF reports or new drawings |
| Switch between already-loaded screens | Get new notifications or sign in |
This only works when Konkat is opened on an https:// address. On a plain http:// address there are no saved copies at all: without signal the screens simply fail to load. See HTTPS and app install.
How Konkat keeps copies#
Every time a screen loads with signal, Konkat keeps a copy of what the server sent on your phone. It always tries the network first, so with signal you always see the latest data. When the network fails, it shows the last copy instead.
- The app itself — the last working version is kept, so the installed app opens even with no signal.
- Screens and lists — the dashboard, plan, tasks, logbook, stock and so on, as last loaded on this phone.
- Photos — once a photo has been shown on your screen it is kept and opens instantly next time.
Konkat keeps a limited number of recent screens and photos and clears the oldest automatically, so it does not fill your phone.
The No signal bar#
When you are seeing a saved copy, a bar appears under the title:
“No signal — showing what was last loaded. Saving needs a connection.”
Treat the numbers on that screen as possibly out of date. When signal returns, Konkat says “Back online” and refreshes the screen by itself. You can also pull down to refresh.
If you open a screen that was never loaded on this phone, you see “No signal — couldn’t load this. Check the connection and pull down to refresh.”
Saving with weak signal#
Saving always goes straight to the server — Konkat does not store unsent updates to send later. So:
- Fill the form as usual — progress taps, daily log, workers sheet, QC.
- Press Save — if there is no signal you see “No signal — this wasn’t saved. Try again when you have a connection.” (or “Couldn’t reach the server — this wasn’t saved. Try again in a moment.” when the phone has signal but the server can’t be reached).
- Keep the screen open — what you typed stays in the form. Don’t close the app or go to another screen.
- Move to better signal — step out of the basement or near a window, wait for “Back online”.
- Press Save again — check for the success message before you leave the screen.
Photos#
Photos upload one by one in the background. If one fails, it shows the error with a Retry button: “No signal — upload failed. Tap Retry when you have a connection.” Tap Retry once you have signal. Wait for all photos to finish before saving the entry.
On a site with no signal at the work face, take photos with the phone’s normal camera, then add them with Choose photos when you are back in signal. They will be stamped Uploaded instead of Live.
Prepare before going into a dead zone#
- Open the screens you will need — the task page, the drawings list, today’s workers sheet — while you still have signal.
- Download any drawing you need as a file on the phone; drawings need a connection to open.
- Note what you did on paper or in the phone’s notes and record it in Konkat when you are back in signal. If you record it the same day, it is a normal entry, not a correction.
Signing out clears the copies#
When you tap Sign out, Konkat removes every saved screen and photo from the phone. Sign out on shared phones so the next person can’t read your project data.
Common questions#
The No signal bar stays even though I have signal.#
Pull down to refresh. If it stays, the phone may have signal but no data (check mobile data / Wi-Fi), or the Konkat server may be down.
I saved without signal and it disappeared.#
If you saw “this wasn’t saved”, it wasn’t. Record it again.
